The first question you may have is, "what exactly is a rash guard?"
A rash guard, (AKA: rashguard, rashie, surf shirt and other names), is a shirt made of nylon lycra that is designed to be worn in the water to protect your skin. It's designed to fit skin tight so it stays put and doesn't float up around your chest in the water.
During many water activities such as surfing and body boarding your skin comes into constant contact with an object in the water and this can produce a painful rash. Even wearing a lifejacket during a day of water skiing or snorkeling can cause a rash.
Rash guards also provide UV protection with a rating of SPF 50+.
Determine Your Need:
When shopping for a rash guard shirt, the first question you should ask yourself is, "what do I want my rash guard to do?".
Many Uses:
You may be interested in purchasing a rash guard for UV protection for yourself or your children.
Rash guards are a great choice for UV protection as they offer SPF 50+ protection that will last all day, (in or out of the water), aren't messy like some sunscreens and don't need to be reapplied to give you all-day protection.
If UV protection is your main reason for purchasing a rash guard then long sleeves are recommended as they will offer the most coverage and therefore the most protection.
If you're a surfer or body boarder more interested in rash protection be sure you get the correct size as you want a snug fitting rash guard so the shirt clings tightly to your body. This way it will stay in place and maintain a protective barrier between you and your board.
For you women surfers and body boarders a rash guard shirt will also protect your expensive bathing suit from the wear and tear of rubbing on your board.
You may also want long sleeves if you tend to rub the insides of your arms against your board while paddling.
If you're getting a rash guard for your small children you may want to consider getting a bright color, (i.e. yellow or red), to make them easier to spot in the water, especially if it's a crowded day at the beach, lake or pool.
Speaking of pools, remember that pools with high chlorine content, (i.e. public pools), will damage your rash guard as chlorine will eat away at the nylon lycra fabric, (ladies, you know you can't bleach your nylons, right?).
Say you're not a surfer or body boarder but just someone going on a cruise or summer vacation where you'll be in the water snorkeling or floating with a fancy drink in your hand.
If you're lucky enough to be shopping for a rash guard for this type of use get one in a color that will match your bathing suit or swim trunks and go about one size larger. That way you'll look stylish and be comfortable while protecting yourself from getting sunburn and potentially ruining your trip. Ladies, you may also want to get more than one color to take on your trip so you can mix and match with your bathing suits.
When you're shopping for a rash guard be sure to take a moment and ask yourself a few questions about what you want the rash guard to provide you with and what you're going to be wearing it for. That way you'll be sure to make a purchase you'll be happy with and you'll get a rash guard to fill your needs.

A New Nutritional Approach for Both Pet Allergies and Allergies to Pets
A New Understanding of Allergies
Allergies of all kinds seem to be on the rise--both for people and for their pets. The exciting new science of Glycobiology points strongly to a common basis for many of these allergies; and the revolutionary new nutritional technology of glyconutrition, which has developed from this new science, is proving to be a very effective--and natural--way to help both pets and their owners get marked relief from their allergies.
A recent 12-year longitudinal study with people who began the study as young, healthy adults found that the functional level of their immune systems declined, on average, at the rate of about 3% per year. This rapid decline is correlated with a corresponding increase in the incidence of auto-immune diseases and a proliferation of allergies of all kinds--including allergies to pets.
Ironically, however, pets also are commonly afflicted with stubborn allergies that are a source of much distress--and expense--for their owners. And, very commonly--just as with their owners--medical interventions that mainly focus on treating the symptoms are quite ineffective.
The findings of Glycobiology suggest that this prevailing approach may be barking up the wrong tree, so to speak, and that a nutritional intervention that, instead, supplies the body with crucial micronutrients that are lacking is likely to be far more effective.
Glycobiology has now established that every cell in the mammalian body requires eight necessary sugar molecules in order to function effectively. These sugars combine with protein and fat molecules into glycoforms that attach themselves to the surfaces of every cell in the body. Under an electron microscope, they look like weird trees growing on the cell surface. One of their most important functions there is to allow cells to communicate effectively with each other.
To the degree that these "super sugars" are deficient, cell-to-cell communication tends to break down and some form of illness starts to develop.
An insufficiency of these sugar molecules is particularly disastrous for the immune system, because it causes the cells of the immune system to become, in effect, partially blind. These cells can then become over-reactive in attacking allergens of all kinds and even in attacking the tissues of the body; on the other hand, ironically, they may become under-reactive in attacking true pathogens that are serious threats to the body.
Unfortunately, six of these crucially-important sugar molecules are seriously lacking in the modern diet. They are commonly found, however, in vine-ripened fruits and vegetables and also in many of the wild foods that our stone-age ancestors consumed in abundance.
When these glyconutrients, as they are called technically (glyco from the Greek word for "sweet"), are provided in adequate quantity to the body through supplementation, all of the cells in the body start functioning much more effectively. This is especially true for cells in the immune system. As cell-to-cell communication improves in this system, it tends to become better modulated--that is, less likely either to over- or under-react. Correspondingly, allergies and auto-immune conditions tend to diminish or disappear.
Just as these crucial glyconutrients are lacking in the modern diet for humans, they are similarly deficient in nearly all commercial pet food, which is also loaded with artificial dyes, perservatives and additives. The ancestors of our canine and feline pets--just like our human ancestors--have spent eons eating wild, natural foods, and this is what their systems are designed for. It is only in the last several decades that they--along with their owners--have been exposed to commercially prepared foods, as well as the chemicals these foods contain - chemicals that their bodies (as well as ours) cannot tolerate. In addition, artificial ingredients in these foods can trigger an immune response that, quite literally, can make pets sick.
An Example of Applying this New Approach
The following true story illustrates just how effective glyconutrition can be in helping to restore balance to a pet's over-reactive immune system.
Ted, a Golden Retriever, is the pride and joy of his owner, Mary. His chronic, severe ear infections and skin rash, therefore, distressed her very much. She consulted with various Veterinarians and tried every kind of treatment she heard of to get them under control. But nothing worked.
When a friend recommended glyconutritional supplements as a possible remedy, she was very skeptical. After giving Ted a teaspoon of glyconutritional powder, mixed with ice cream, once a day for about two weeks, however, his ear infections and his skin rashwa went away. Her skepticism continued, however, so she stopped giving it to him when her supply of these natural sugars ran out. Almost immediately, his ear infections and skin rash came back.
Still skeptical, Mary got some more of this product and resumed the previous regimen; and again, after just a few days, all of his symptoms went away. Around this time, a close friend and dog lover who knew Ted very well and who didn't know that he was receiving this daily supplement, commented to Mary that she had never before seen his coat looking so healthy and shiny. And then, as they both observed Ted more closely, they noticed to their surprise, that he had grown eyelashes that he didn’t have previously!
Ted then continued to be symptom-free for a period of several months. But then, once again, when the supplement supply ran out, Mary thought that he might not need it anymore. But, again, all of his symptoms quickly returned when she stopped giving it to him. She then quickly started him on this nutritional regimen once again, and this has continued to be a part of his daily diet to the present timeâ€"about two years since he first started. He remains completely free of his original symptoms and both he and his owner are delighted. After examining him, a Veterinarian who had treated him unsuccessfully for many years, was very impressed and decided to try this new nutritional approach with some of her other pet clients.
Impressive though they are, very similar results have been reported for animals subject to a wide array of health challenges that have also received glyconutrients. Some of these results have been presented on an audiotape by Arthur Young, DVM, a homeopathic Veterinarian with over 50 years experience. (Information about how to obtain a copy of this tape is available from the author.)

How To Have Really Great Looking Skin
Copyright 2006 David Maillie
Every woman idolizes the female stars of the red carpet. How is it that their skin is so perfect and flawless? Why can't we have skin like that? What unique skin care treatments and regimens do they use? Why is it that some people just have amazing skin? There are thousands of skin care products hawked in TV ads and at the local stores. Some can be quite expensive like Strivectin SD (around $100 a tube). What really works? Great skin is not only for the stars and can be achieved by anyone with a little knowledge of skin care and treatments. It also doesn't have to be super expensive either.
First of all, too many of us use harsh soaps and cleansers that actually dry out the skin. Dermatologists know this and routinely prescribe and recommend gentle cleansers like Cetaphil that will clean without irritation. Irritation can lead to rashes and breakouts. It can also worsen acne. Yes, in some really oily cases, dermatologists will recommend a strong anti oil soap like Dial soap. But for regular to dry skin it will cause over drying and can cause photo aging of the skin (which causes wrinkles and fine lines to appear before their time).
It is a good idea to follow up with a moisturizer that is non comodogenic or non pimple causing. Find a moisturizer that you like and stick with it, one that smells pleasing, does not cause skin allergies, and one that you really like. It is important to find a moisturizer with sun blocking features added. If it does not then you will need to add a sun lotion to your regimen. Basically, you want to keep your skin care regimen as simple as possible. The simpler it is the more likely you will follow it. Every added and unnecessary step will make it that much more likely that it will end up like a New Years resolution, a wish that doesn't hold out.
Limit sun exposure as it can age your skin and cause wrinkling, sun spots, freckles and fine lines. Yes, many of the stars always seem to have beautiful tans and the sun only makes them look better. The reality, though, is that many of them fake it. They use spray on tans and products with self tanners in them. They also have these professionally applied so it is a beautiful and seem less application. Also, many of the pictures we see have actually been touched up by computer photo editing and digital software. The latest advances in digital photo editing have recently been revealed in articles in the New York Times and it is quite amazing. They can add or remove weight, age or rejuvenate skin, etc… So, many times when we see these stars and how beautiful they may look, they really don't look that way.
One treatment currently used by almost every plastic surgeon and dermatologist on stars and non stars is the TCA peel. The TCA peel has the ability to remove several layers of skin and reveal younger and fresher skin from underneath. It can treat aging skin, remove or lessen blemishes and pigmentation problems, even tighten skin as it increases the production of collagen. A TCA peel will also restore the skins pH to normal and reduce the conditions favorable to a bacterial infection like acne. TCA peels are actually one of the only treatments currently used for both anti aging and acne treatment.
So there you have some great advice, use a gentle cleanser, moisturize, use a high SPF protection, get a TCA peel, and don't get discouraged as the stars don't always have perfect skin.
